Frequently Asked Questions

I love all the new maternity fashion - when is it acceptable to start buying maternity clothes?

Every woman is different and so is her changing shape. Some women put weight on in a few areas and some only develop a small bump, so any time is the right time to start buying maternity wear. I even had to buy a few materity pieces after the birth as it took a while for my body to get back into shape. Great maternity clothing is designed to give eight months of maternity wear, that's over two seasons of maternity fashion. So you need to find fashionable maternity clothes to suit you from the 14th week of pregnancy through to three months after birth. (Sorry to all you first-timers out there but your body may need a few months to get back in shape!) The sooner you buy maternity clothes, the more value you'll get from your new maternity wardrobe.

Isn't it just easier to buy my usual style of clothes from my favourite retailers in just a size bigger?

This theory can sometimes work, but as your body changes shape you will find that its worth the investment to have cool, comfortable maternity clothes that will move as you do - not against you. Go for fabric that stretches and lets your skin breath. Ours are more durable than non-maternity wear, because clothes are worn, and washed, very intensely for those eight months. Opt for clever details, such as ruched sides and wraps, so maternity clothes grow and shrink with you for a fitted, neat look. Pick maternity clothes that flaunt what you like about your body, along with those new highlights... your sexy cleavage perhaps? Now is the time to celebrate your new maternity shape, so make the most of it with our sexy, trendy maternity gear that is designed to make you look good and feel good!

When should I start wearing a maternity bra?

Depending who you listen to, there are differences of opinion on this maternity question. Again, it depends on how quickly your body starts to change shape, but during your second trimester is a good time to start wearing a maternity bra. A good quality maternity bra is essential. At first try a soft maternity bra like our T Shirt Bra which is designed with comfort in mind and smooth lines for wearing maternity T shirts; this can be comfortably worn for bedtime as well. Then as your ribs expand and your cup size goes up, this first maternity bra will feel tight. At this point, it's really worth visiting an experienced maternity bra fitter to measure you and give you advice. See our maternity bra and lingerie section. (Under-wired is not recommended in pregnancy).

How do I avoid the 'maternity blues'?

Treat yourself to beautiful maternity wear or something that makes you feel fantastic. You deserve to be the centre of attention right now, as when baby's here, you'll have to share the limelight.

Non maternity big and baggy clothes are so comfortable .....

Going for non maternity bigger sizes or baggy sweaters from his wardrobe is a mistake. They fall off your shoulders, sag in the bum, and hang off your bump like table linen. You'll look (and feel) bigger than you are, and appear less elegant. Plus you need to go up a size each month to accommodate your growing maternity belly. Expensive and depressing. And thats before we start talking about the unfeminine way it will make you feel ...... Maternity clothes are made to make you feel lovely and feminine so you will remember the maternity experience as a special time in your life.

I love my jeans and can't bear that I can't get into my fave jeans anymore. Whats the most stylish maternity jeans on the market that I should buy?

Every pregnant woman needs to buy a good pair of maternity jeans that willl last her through her nine months in style and comfort. There are essentially two types of fit for maternity jeans: underbelly and overbelly fit. There are so many pros and cons for each, but basically if you wanna pair to stay up, then get the over belly style but if that doesn't bother you and you really like the hipster style of fit, go for the underbelly style. Then of course, you can decide whether you like a bootleg cut, straight leg or skinny leg in a whole host of different washes and fabrics.
