How to Get Best Fitting Maternity Jeans

How to get BEST fitting

MATERNITY JEANS

Congratuations if you've just found out
that you're pregnant!

You know when you need to start purchasing maternity clothes when you start bursting out of your favourite jeans and they gradually starting falling down your hips!

This is the point where you can either experiment with the various belly fasteners that are currently on the market to try and get more mileage out of your pre-pregnancy jeans, or bite the bullet and make your first maternity investment into pure comfort! Buy a good pair of maternity jeans.

Bootleg, skinny leg, straight leg, wide leg ..... with elasticated waist pull on or non elasticated waist? Which one should I choose?

Maternity jeans have come a long way and now with so many styles around, its often hard to know which style to choose, so lets look at the fundamental basic styles around.

Staying Up

The most important factor when purchasing maternity jeans has to be the ability for them to stay up. I guess, like most maternity clothes, this depends on your shape, or your baby's shape aka: the bump.

I've tried on a whole heap of different maternity jeans and, in my opinion, maternity jeans with the wide jersey fabric stitched onto the maternity jean waistband is the best style to ensure stay-up ability. If you think about it, it makes sense because the jersey fabric pulls up (and sometimes over) the bump, giving something for the maternity jeans to hold on to.

Of course, there are maternity jeans available that only have a small elasticated waistband and these would ensure comfort, ease of pulling on and will stay up pretty good but the waistband will sit just on the bump at mid point of your belly.

If you really hate the look of the 'pouch' style look with the jersey panel that pulls up over your belly, then opt for the 'under belly' style which look just like non pregnancy jeans and have an internal elasticated system which you can pull in tight for a more snug fit, or release when your belly expands to give more room. The good thing about these maternity jeans, is that they don't look like maternity jeans at all, and you would be more inclined to wear them again after the birth of your baby, whilst slimming back down to your normal size. The waistband usually sits just under the belly as hipsters and this depends on your size and shape of your maternity bump as to whether they stay up!

Maternity wear is now stylish as well as functional and gone are the days of the wide flowing tent-like garments that try to hide the growing bump. Now days, we welcome the use of elasticated, stretchy fabrics like spandex, elastane and lycra that ensure the fabric can grow with your bump and accentuate your new curves and growing bump. Gorgeous maternity blouses, maternity dresses and maternity tops are all available in beautiful modern prints and styles that will look fantastic paired with a great fitting maternity jean.

The most flattering of all maternity jean styles has to be the bootleg cut. This style really helps to balance the silhouette of weight at the mid point of your belly, with the wider cut at the ankle and gives a really streamlined look that in turn, makes you look slimmer. These days, a whole host of colours are available, the most popular being dark indigo, washed blue and jet black.

If you are lucky enough to carry off this season's hottest maternity jean style, then try the skinny leg maternity jean. Popular colours include dark indigo, vintage blue, jet black and washed blue.

Straight Leg maternity jeans are a good alternative to the skinny leg maternity jean as they balance out the leg from the thinnest to the widest point, creating a more streamlined, flattering look to the body. Popular colours this season include dark indigo, jet black, vintage blue, washed blue and white.

Maternity jeans, hands down are a pregnant gals godsend when it comes to good maternity wardrobe investment. There are lots of different price points out there, but of course, this depends on your own personal budget. Don't forget, you will get a lot of mileage out of your maternity jeans for there is a good chance that you will be wearing your maternity jeans well after the birth of your baby until your body shape has returned to normal.

Sweet Lilly Maternity is Australia's premier shop at home maternity, nursing and baby store that has the world's top brands in stylish maternity wear. We have a fantastic collection of maternity jeans with lots of choice of colour, style and price point.

What Maternity & Nursing Bra Should I Buy?

Date Added: 2/3/2008

Fabulous Sexy Maternity + Nursing Bras

When you first find out that you're pregnant, how do you know which maternity or nursing bra to buy?

What's the difference between the two?     .     When should you start wearing them?
Why are there so many different ones on the market?   .    How much support should they give?

We explore some of the different bras on the market and discover the pros & cons of the different styles around
to help you make the right maternity bra choice.

First and foremost, I think its fair to say that if you want to buy a newspaper, you would buy it from a newsagents.  If you want to buy a good maternity bra, then you should get it from a reputable maternity bra manufacturer.

Maternity Bras take a lot of wear and tear so buying from an established bra manufacturer is the best thing you can do.  These manufacturers have established their reputation over the years and have incorporated customer feedback into their designs.  A maternity bra can look good - but can it deliver?

One such good maternity bra manufacturer that has been around for quite a while is Bravado Designs.  Bravado are based in Canada and have many top celebrity mums wearing their designs (Britney, Angelina, Jennifer Garner, Sarah Jessica-Parker to name a few.)

Consider how the bra will feel when worn.  Consider that you'll probably be wearing it 24/7 so you'll probably need a few of them, perhaps in different colours to spice up your wardrobe or colour co-ordinate with outer wear.

A maternity bra has to have easy access clips for drop down cups for easy access when nursing.  If you intend sleeping in the maternity bra, then perhaps consider how comfortable it will be (eg, back fastener clips).  Some bras are made with no back fastener clips so these pesky fasteners don't dig into your  back when sleeping.  A good maternity bra that doesn't have any back fasteners is the Original Nursing Bra by Bravado.  The style is kinda like a crop top/Sports Bra and its very comfortable to wear.  Its available in a great choice of colours and prints: Leopard Print, Polka Dot Print, Blush, White, Black and Sky Blue.

Good Support & Design:  Obviously your bra needs to be made from good supportive fabric so that your boobs don't 'fall out'.  The design has to be without any underwires (as endorsed by healthcare professionals).  There are some nursing bras around that look good but lack good support (which is crucial for the fuller figure).  These bras would be ok for sleeping in and helping to deliver nightime feeds to your baby.

Maternity TShirt Bras:  Imagine wearing a decorative lacey or highly visible printed maternity bra underneath a tighter fitting Tshirt or maternity top - doh!  Much better to wear a plain, neutral, seamless bra that will enhance your hot (new) bigger boobs, rather than create a sloppy look with patterns appearing through the fabric.  One such great Maternity TShirt Bra is the new Body Silk Seamless Bra by Bravado.  Since its launch, it has revolutionised the Maternity Tshirt Bra market with its seamless design, soft buttery feel against the skin made from super soft cotton and baby rib inset detail.  These bras are available in S, M, L, XL in a choice of great neutral colours: ivory, black or butterscotch that will lift and enhance the boobs, creating a fantastic look for wearing under tshirts and other form fitting tops and dresses.

Sex Appeal: most women these days accept that if you look good, then you feel good!  Extend that philosophy to sexy underwear and you have a market for hot sexy maternity wear.  One such manufacturer from New Zealand has capitalised on this very market and have recently launched HOTmilk - offering a fantastic range of sexy, racey maternity bras, maternity lingerie and maternity nightwear that is guaranteed to make you feel like one hot mama!  The range is available online at Sweet Lilly Maternity and if you need a size that isn't listed on the website, simply email us at
admin@sweetlillymaternity.com.au and we will special order it in for you.

Nursing Tanks & Tops: once you have found a great fitting maternity bra, most manufacturers are incorporating their style into a functional nursing tank with inbuilt bra.  It would encompass the same features and benefits of a great fitting maternity bra, built into a functional outer garment in the style of a nursing tank or top.  Bravado have designed an exceptional nursing tank which looks fantastic worn as an outer garment with the benefit of an inbuilt bra.  This is perfect for breastfeeding your baby when out in public or even during your hospital stay.

The Low Down on Nursing Wear ... made easy!

Date Added: 30/1/2008

What's the Hype About

Breastfeeding Clothes?

The Breastfeeding Association is constantly telling us that Breastfeeding is the best thing we can give our babies to a fine start in life.

With this in mind, we check out the pros + cons of
breasfeeding clothes currently available on the market today

Maternity websites, boutiques and the maternity fashion press are all telling us that we should be buying nursing wear in preparation for when the baby is born and we commence with breastfeeding. Nobody is doubting that breastfeeding is the most natural and best form of nutrition we can give our babies, but when you’re a busy mum and want to get out of the four walls and the confines of your house, it can still be quite overwhelming when you need to breastfeed in public. This is where specialist nursing wear really works. A breastfeeding top or dress has been styled with an additional layer, or easy access to your nursing bra to allow you to breastfeed in public without the worry of exposing your breasts or belly in public. Of course, you could simply invest in a cotton muslim wrap and cover yourself and there are plenty of women who simply don’t care about this issue, however, breastfeeding is a very personal experience and not everybody feels comfortable bearing all.

To help our clients make the right choice in selecting nursing wear, we’ve highlighted the benefits of some of the different styles currently on the market.

There are 2 types of nursing wear; those with a built in bra (eliminating the need for you to wear a bra at all) and those with clever styling for easy access to your nursing bra.

You would usually expect to pay a little more for a top or dress with a built in bra (obviously) but the benefits are fantastic. Our model (far left) is wearing a nursing top with built in bra and demonstrates how it works by unclipping the discreet clips on the shoulder straps which release an additional panel of fabric which snuggly keeps the boobs in place and allows access for feeding. Of course, its wise to invest in a piece that is made from cotton/lycra to allow the fabric to breathe and give you maximum stretch-a-bility.

Other types of nursing tops and dresses accommodate an additional ‘privacy’ layer which cleverly hides the tummy when you pull aside the top layer for breastfeeding. The body layer also has fabric holes to allow easy access to the breast.

Nursing wear is a great idea as you can wear them throughout your pregnancy and then afterwards for breastfeeding.

At Sweet Lilly Maternity, we have a fantastic range of funky tops with built in bras and more ‘loose’ fitting tops and dresses to provide great coverage and easy access for breastfeeding. All of our styles are made from cotton/lycra mix and we now have a range of organic nursing wear too.

Top Secret Maternity have revolutionised the concept and practicality of having a nursing top with an inbuilt bra.  No mess, no more struggling with pesky bra fasteners ... voila - a nursing bra and blouse in one.  Imagine how easy this makes breastfeeding at home, let alone out in public!  Many of the new styles from Top Secret Maternity are featured in Australian Maternity Press such as Cosmopolitan Pregnancy Magazine, Pregnancy & Birth, Parenting, Mother & Baby and most recently have been featured on the Kerri Ann Show.

Sweet Lilly Maternity is a major stockist of nursing wear from Top Secret Maternity.  Just click the link below to view the range:

YUMMY MUMMY Style Guide

Date Added: 15/1/2008

the hottest new accessories in Hollywood are babies ...

YUMMY MUMMY Fashion

Written by Nicola Hyland

Baby fever is in the air! Fashionistas are now becoming Mama-nistas!

Thank Goodness the fashion world is pulling up its socks for the fabulous Yummy Mummy! Posh Spice, Ginger Spice, Baby Spice and Scary Spice!

Mummyhood is spicy and we like it. Nicole’s doing it. Naomi just did it. Now the pitter patter of little feet is no longer just the sound of the tiny handbag dog. The hottest new accessories in Hollywood are babies and your favourite celebrities are clamouring for the greatest roles of their career: motherhood.

While many of these gals have not proven to be the greatest role-models, there is something that we mere mortals can thank the likes of Kate Moss, Gwen Stefani and Ange Jolie for- the rise of the ‘yummy mummy.’ For centuries across the globe, pregnancy has been treated as some sort of unfortunate nine-month illness. Throughout history, women were often bed-bound and kept out of the public eye during the final months of pregnancy.  Maternity Fashion was often designed to disguise the ‘offending’ bump; a practice still adhered to at least until the 1970s by the fashion world.

Unflattering tent dresses and hillbilly-style dungarees were expected to be a staple of the expecting maternity mother – no wonder they wanted to remain incognito!  One of the pioneers of the ‘Yummy Mummy’ Celebrities was probably Demi Moore.  In 1991, Demi posed nude on the cover of Vanity Fair while seven months pregnant with her second child.  Provoking a bit of a scandal, Demi also managed to break through Hollywood preconceptions and affirm that pregnancy only makes a woman more beautiful.  Now married to a mere boy - Ashton Kutcher - Demi still manages to prove that motherhood (and age) only makes a woman more attractive!  Nowadays, Demi’s naked ambition seems pretty normal – Kate Moss posed naked for a life-sized painting for Lucien Freud while heavily pregnant (which later sold for more than $7 million!).  Britney did it for Harper’s Bazaar, while pregnant with her second son and Jordan… let’s not even talk about her naked photo shoot…

Younger celebrity mothers really embraced the idea of pregnancy as sexy and not a means to hibernate around the late 1990s. Both Scary and Posh Spice continued to tour late into their pregnancies during the Spice Girl heyday, showing off their bare midriff bellies to the world.  Being pregnant was no longer the end of careers, with Yummy Mummy celebs like Catherine Zeta Jones continuing to work late into their third trimester.  Sarah Jessica Parker managed to reclaim high fashion for the expecting by filming Sex and the City ‘around’ her baby bump. Amazing what a bouquet of flowers or constant head shots can do…

While you may not want to wander around in nothing at all, the modern yummy Mummy can make fashion her friend. In Australia, trendy stores like Sweet Lilly Maternity, Ripe and Soon Melbourne cater for the fashion-savvy mother-to-be.   You can even find amazing imported styles at Sweet Lilly Maternity such as Mama Black Jeans, Tala Jeans, Olian of Miami, Maternal America, Lauren Kiyomi to name a few, not forgetting our Australian successful brands such as Soon Melbourne, Ripe Maternity, Top Secret Maternity, Fresh Mums Nursing Wear and gorgeous contemporary baby label Fish Lilly.

Designer Dana Sourry from Sydney frock queen Maternity label: Lilly B writes how she designs Maternity wear to “create envy in the eyes of the non-pregnant.”   High end fashion designers are starting to market for the trendy upcoming Mum, with labels like Lilly B, Isabella Oliver, Tocca, L’Atessa and Anna Sui offering lines for those with growing bellies and healthy wallets.

Fashion for Yummy Mummies combines comfort with style. As we are continually saying, the boho-inspired maxi dress and the empire line pinafores are flattering for almost everyone! We expect that YM’s will be following in Nicole’s footsteps and wearing the gorgeous tailored A-line smocks she has been seen in her early months. Form-fitting fabrics accentuate the best new bit of your body, with stretchy dresses and sweater tops made to fit all sizes. There is something about that ‘rosy glow’ of my pregnant friends that no amount of bronze or blusher can emulate – hey, pregnant women are gorgeous whatever they wear!

Recent prizes for the best Yummy Mummies go to Heidi Klum, Gwen Stefani and that uber Earth mother, Angelina Jolie. Katie Holmes has definitely benefited from motherhood [and Posh’s stylist] in the fashion stakes, while Kate Hudson is a pretty hot Mamma - now allegedly back on the market again. Also a hot single Mum, Reese Witherspoon manages to match her outfits to her cutie-pied daughter Ava, which is just a little creepy… Apparently Kate Moss’s daughter Lila-Grace has become a true fashion addict – a much healthier addiction then some of the vices her Mum has had! Congratulations to Nicole and Isla Fisher on their newly revealed joys – who predicts will be the next to join the Yummy Mummy Crew? The booby prize for Faux-pas Ma’s inevitably goes to the troublesome Britney, while the less publicity Jordan gets for motherly advice the better!

When you are thinking of naming your trendy new bundle, PLEASE don’t follow the lead of Demi, Geri or Gwyneth and name your child something ridiculous like Button or Moonflower. Not even famous Yummy Mummies get away with doing that to their children! Unfortunately, while fashion and babies might go together in most circumstances, you can’t exchange a baby for another pair of shoes. And nobody tells your wee one not to burp up on your brand new silk dress… I’m just enjoying everyone else’s babies for the time being!

Shop at Sweet Lilly Maternity for a fantastic range of maternity clothing and maternity wear sourced from around the globe at affordable prices. Maternity jeans, maternity tops, maternity evening wear, maternity lingerie, maternity party dresses, maternity swimwear and maternity breastfeeding tops and dresses are all available with a huge selection of great maternity designs. You will find Australia's top maternity designers and labels as well as some fantastic edgy overseas maternity labels. Maternity wear has never looked so good!

7 Maternity Celebrity Secrets

Date Added: 15/1/2008

7 Celebrity Maternity Secrets

Whatever the weather, the celebrities always seem to get it right - or do they?  We take a look at how the pregnant celebrities dress in maternity wear.  Do they get it right or wrong?  Who wears the best maternity clothes and who wears the worst?

Fashionistas around the globe are becoming fixated on celebrity maternity style and who wouldn’t blame them? “I bet she looks fat in that!” (snigger snigger) is whats on everybody’s mind, but time after time, celebrity A Listers appear in public looking fan-bloody-tastic ….how come, and how can we get the same look?

Secret Number 1

Its all in the maternity style! You gotta invest in some hot maternity clothing that is edgy, colourful with up to the minute style. Its ok buying a size up in regular clothing, but as your shape changes, so does the ability to look hot in regular clothes. So this is our very obvious secret: source out hot maternity wear! You know, these days, maternity wear is styled on what’s fashionable at the present time and gone are the days of flowing pinafores, tents and bibs n’ braces.

Secret Number 2

Don’t be afraid to layer it all up! In other words, go boho! Don’t be afraid to put stripes with floral or lace with hot colours, layer over layer. This works really well in the cooler months but remember to keep it simple. Don’t overdo it! Experiment and have fun.

Secret Number 3

Go the extra mile for really important events. So many beautiful gowns, maxi dresses and minis are around at the moment in gorgeous prints and colours. Remember that your pregnancy should be a time to remember and you wanna remember yourself looking and feeling gorgeous and radiant. Baby showers, birthdays, office parties, hot dinner dates and family get-togethers – treat yourself to a few pieces of girly dresses and bask in the adoring looks that you are sure to receive!

Secret Number 4

Enhance the Glow! There’s gotta be some benefits to being pregnant, right? Make the most of that gorgeous shiny hair and strong nails and take time out for manicures (even if you have to do it yourself!) and trips to the hairdressers. You shouldn’t need much make up as the new you will be glowing with radiance!

Secret Number 5

Key maternity pieces such as wrap skirts & dresses, tops and skirts with shirred panels and fabrics in soft jersey and lycra will ensure you look amazing without the bulk! Gone are the days when jersey was considered drab, boring and cheap! Nowadays, it made from super soft materials which not only drape fabulously but actually make you look slimmer, just enhancing the bump. Lycra used to only be used for swimwear or dancewear, but now it is available in gorgeous colours with lots of stretch-a-bility to create amazing styles that accentuates the bumps, curves and growing boobs.

Secret Number 6

Lets talk sexy maternity lingerie! Gone are the days of the shoulder boulder nursing and maternity bras, now we have some seriously sexy lingerie that brings a smile to everybody’s face. It simple: if you feel good, then you look good – its shows in your confidence and the way that you walk and talk.

Secret Number 7

Don’t hide your body! This is probably the most important rule of all and its very true. If you hide it, then you’re probably gonna end up looking bigger. Use belts positioned above the bump (on your torso’s smallest area) to ‘bring in’ wide smock flowing maternity tops and don’t be afraid of figure hugging fabrics layered to create a very sexy and feminine look.

The most important rule of all is to be kind to yourself. Take this time to relax, nourish your soul and create perfect harmony for your growing baby.

Sweet Lilly Maternity is Australia's premier home shopping website for funky, colourful and extremely edgy maternity wear for the fashion conscious mummy to be. We pride ourselves on keeping ahead of the rest by continually sourcing the worlds's best maternity styles that resemble runway fashion.
